"5 Nigga Rule"

Got this in an email from one of my boys who is a big time promoter in Scottsdale. He happens to be black which is very ironic. If youve ever been out to Scottsdale maybe you've been a victim of this. I have been told my jeans were "too baggy" on a few occasions. How are $300 Selvedge Jeans too baggy? Thats another blog entry though. I have been to PCL a few times and have seen this happen to people. Club owners the LAST thing you wanna do is get a community of people boycotting your spot. If there is a dress code fine, people should deal with that. But discrimination helps nobody at the end of the day. Everyones money is green. This could turn out bad, especially with the All-Star game in Phoenix next year. Dude better find Al Sharpton quick. Kinda long but worth the read.

Racism in Old Town Scottsdale: One Arizona Businessman’s Shocking Personal Experience

February 28th, 2008 a local African American businessman, owner of a high-end marketing firm working with reputable clients in television, product, fashion and more, was confronted with the ugly face of racism at Scottsdale nightlife hotspot PCL. This man and four of his affluent Caucasian partners approached the door at PCL, and after the Caucasian group members were let in, the African-American was denied entry. When staff were asked by the entering party why the African-American wasn’t allowed in the doorman replied “ I can’t let you in with baggy clothes and chains and (expletive deleted).” The aforementioned businessman denied entry was wearing business casual attire: a button down shirt, sweater vest, dress shoes and no jewelry. This comment was understood by all parties present as uncalled for and blatantly racist. All four Caucasian business partners were allowed into PCL in t-shirts and sneakers, and they expressed their disgust for the denied entry of their better-dressed friend. The final straw was when one of the Caucasian partners talked to the doormen, who said the owner, ______ , says to keep the club “light”.

This is not the first reported incident of racism at PCL. The term “5 (racial epithet deleted) rule” is rumoured to have its roots in staff training for PCL and its partner clubs, who tell their staff they can have no more than five African-Americans in their clubs at one time.

This particular incident has found its way to press statements due to the connections, affluence, and perserverance of the victim. There can be no doubt there are many without the resources to make a statement who have felt the unforgivable pain of racism at PCL before.

The victim in this case is organizing a boycott against The PCL and any clubs under the same ownership. Influential African-Americans are backing this project, and board has been formed to discuss boycotts and potential legal action against the club. Presidential Candidate Barack Obama decline to comment, but a staff member of the democratic party in Arizona said the issue “will definetly be addressed”. The victim in this case asks all other victims of racist actions from this venue to please contact the marketing firm below. Any interested community leaders or individuals, both African-American and otherwise, please contact below to find out how you can get involved in preventing Scottsdale from allowing such racist behavior in nightlife.

***Edit- March 13th: The names have been removed on demands of their lawyers.

but if your from AZ you know what 'PCL' stands for-

Obama 08! Lol!

PCL bouncers and I go way back in the fact that our relationship exists on opposite sides of the rope separated by the number of high heels I'm with.

Having the rep of being one of the hottest clubs in scottsdale, I'm sure they love to feel empowerment as well as any other bouncer at any other club in any other place.

I agree that this is not breaking news...

However the main difference here is they made the mistake of fucking with the wrong person and the racism factor was exposed that is usually covered by the "dress code" as most clubs try to do.

I feel K when they say, your fine denim is too baggy and you can't wear your $350 hoody in the club when you got underage fratboys in seven jeans and 1mx express shirts lined up.

As a bouncer you do what the owner tells you to do, and as a club owner I fully understand that there is a business aspect and club image to protect.

However, money might buy you muscles but can't buy you brains, and if the bouncer had any smarts he should have let my man in regardless of the color of his skin.

Who lets an entire crew in except for one person?

We all know PCL is a "lighter" club with the exception of the pheonix suns but let's be real, club Next or Mabels in Old Town is no place for my man Ohio.

My point is that there will always be discrimination at the front lines of the clubs.

Your chances are obviously better if you have a nice rack or your skin color is green.

Talk to the people that work for you, and educate them. This is a business, and sometimes they will have to make grown-up decisions in the new millenium.

K, get that streetwear poppin off down here in the valley and let them understand...

Much love crew.

it'll be interesting to see how much buzz this incident actually gets.

i'm african american and it's obvious to me that scottsdale clubs are tired of dealin' with niggas unless we play for the phoenix suns or the arizona cardinals. this is funny to me because scottsdale was at its best back in the 90s when charles barkley, dan majerle and michael jordan used to hang out at jetz and stixx!

behind closed doors, i think most white people support PCL's "alleged" 5-nigga rule.

i hope this incident gets publicity in the mainstream media, but i think the "victim" should be willing to be identified so PCL and other Scottsdale clubs will see that we are willing to stand up against up racism!!

The comments in this blog are killing me. Yes racism (i.e. white supremacy) is definitely lame. However, what's also is just as lame are African-Americans and other people of color clamoring to give their hard-earned money to that bigoted white business owner to begin with, probably in an effort to chase white women. Let's get real with it. Instead you should be trying to establish and support businesses that appreciate your culture and support your community. This shit ain't nothing new so what good does anyone think is going to be accomplished by bringing media attention to this old issue. Since having moved to Arizona in 1997, I observed real quickly that many white business owners particularly in Scottsdale do care if you ever spend another red penny in there establishment especially when you take issue with any of their business practices and have absolutely no problem telling you this in so many words, as did the door man @ PCL. I mean how more out open could he have been. I'll rent a hall, rent the pool area at some nice apartment complex, even throw a house party at my home before I spend my hard-earned cash supporting a business, community, or business owner's family, who couldn't give a damn if I ever spent a thin dime in his or her establishment ever. Black folks, buy a frickin' clue. This shouldn't be news, it should be motivation.

Sincerely,

AdoreBlkWm
